Tennis Coaching in St Lucia

Make a real difference on your gap year by coaching tennis in the Caribbean.

Program description

Work with a range of kids from 6 to 11 years old bringing fun but structured coaching sessions to kids from around the island whilst also being able to play against locals too.

Tennis on the island has historically been a game played in hotels and private estates by wealthy holidaymakers and expatriates, with opportunities for local players hard to come by. This has changed somewhat with the establishment of the state-of-the-art National Tennis Centre in 2011, boasting six international standard hard courts including one signature tournament-style stadium centre court, open to the public.

This helped to spark the emergence of many new talented local players on the island and the formation of a number of Youth and Senior tournaments.

The Tennis Association intends to capitalise on recent developments in accessibility and interest around the game; adding a strict mandate to bring the sport of tennis to all communities on the island of St. Lucia, through grassroots programmes within schools and communities.

Your Tennis Coaching Placement

The tennis placement is based around introductory and beginners sessions within schools across the island. The Majority of your placement will be sessions within schools and the National Tennis Centre introducing mini tennis to children aged 6 to 11 years old. The emphasis in these sessions is on fun and participation, with a goal to pass on basic skills and create excitement around the sport.

The schools we work in are often some of the island’s most impoverished, which means facilities and apparatus will often not be ideal, hence as a coach you will have to be adaptable. United Through Sport will provide coaches with equipment to carry out effective sessions and leave equipment with schools for continued participation where possible.

The Junior Tennis Initiative is a programme ran at the National Tennis Centre focused on developing some of the island’s most gifted youth players.

Normally evening sessions, you will assist the association coaches to try and coach these aspiring stars up to national level and prepare them for any local tournaments they are competing in. It is also a great opportunity to meet some of the island’s local coaches and senior players, where you may even get the chance to play.

Playing level of the groups you may coach are:

  • School visits: beginners/participation
  • Tennis Centre school Sessions: participation level aged 6-11
  • The Junior Tennis Initiative: intermediate and competition level

You will have approx 3hrs coaching per day with additional time being used to play tennis yourself and use the facilities at the tennis centre. We are also keen for you to be involved at a competitive level so matches can be arranged whilst you are with us.

The main locations around the island where you will be running your sessions will be at the St Lucia National Tennis Centre, ‘The Gardens’ tennis court (Castries), with school work being based at Babonneau Secondary, Ciceron Secondary and Ave Maria Primary.

You’ll also take some of the sessions to various schools in the South of the island depending on the timetable for your stay with us.

Your coaching role

Your main aim is to assist us in running fun tennis lessons for kids at different levels of their tennis development. It is important that you can communicate well, taking the knowledge you have for the game and being able to share this with others. Come out with some training drills and fresh ideas in order to help group participation.

You’ll be supported by and shadowed by our local coaches as they acquire new methods and techniques to continue our work throughout the year after you’ve finished your placement with us. Tennis coaches are able to use the tennis centre court and facilities at their leisure during their stay and matches can be arranged for volunteers wishing to compete.
