Ultimate frisbee coaching in St Lucia

An opportunity to be part of establishing a new sport in St Lucia

Project Description

Frisbee in St Lucia is a currently untapped sport, but there is an absolute wealth of potential. With Ultimate Frisbee making bids at the 2024 and 2028 Olympics it is a fantastic opportunity to bring a new sport to the country, and your help could lead to St Lucia entering a new Olympics Team.

Your coaching role will see you working in schools and local communities. Sessions will be during PE lesions or at after-school clubs. Many of the children will be new to the whole concept, so it’s a wonderful opportunity to pass on your skills, but also help install the spirit of the game into the participants. We always encourage our groups to be able to self-referee, this demonstrates respect, sportsmanship and a good understanding of the rules and communicating skills.

Aims and Objectives

As mentioned, the aim is to help introduce a new sport to St Lucia, helping to create new grassroots and school teams. By establishing new Olympic teams the country is open to additional funding and assistance in sports development.

The aims across all of our coaching projects is to create a safe and fun space for children to participate and play. While one of your objectives has to be helping children understand the game, it is crucial that they have a good time doing it. We don’t aim to create superstars, we aim to give children to opportunity to be children, play and have fun. We want to pass on values like teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and honestly. Not to mention the added health benefits of being involved in sport.

Your timetable as a volunteer coach will vary on when you volunteer, but in general you will having sessions during the week with weekends free to explore St Lucia. Daily sessions tend to run from 13:00 to 15:00, which can then be followed by an after school session until around 17:00.

Program participant criteria

To volunteer as a coach you must be a minimum of 18 years old. There is no maximum age and we welcome everyone who is passionate to help. But our volunteers do tend on average to be aged 18 to 25.

No coaching qualifications are required, just a desire to help others. Obviously a background in the sport you wish to coach is always helpful (and recommended). We try to tailor your coaching to your ability. If you are an experienced and confident coach then we can work to have you test your skills with a senior club team, or if you are just starting out you can be more involved with the schools program.
